Real Estate Mentor 1:1 for NYC
Hi Everyone,
I'm a first-time buyer based in NYC and am looking for someone with experience buying, selling, or investing in the New York City apartment market who would be willing to share some advice and sanity-check my thinking. If open, I’d love to either meetup over coffee or virtually.
A little about me: I am natively from FL and moved to NYC for work. My day job and passion is in advertising. However, since I was a teenager, I’ve always flirted with the idea of owning rentals. It was not until about a year ago where my inkling had turned into something more - and I purchased my first book on rentals and listening to the the Bigger Pockets podcast. In terms of getting started, I want to start slowly and pursue buying a place first, which I could live in for 2 years and then rent out long term.
I've been doing some research, but as someone new to the process, I'd love to learn from someone who has gone through it firsthand—particularly around co-ops, market timing, financing, and navigating the buying process in NYC.
Some of the topics I'm trying to better understand include:
- Whether now is a good time to buy versus continue renting
- Long-term investment considerations in NYC real estate
- The pros and cons of co-ops
- Financing options, especially when putting down a large amount of cash
- What to expect throughout the purchase and closing process
- Common mistakes first-time buyers make
- Strategies for finding and evaluating apartments
If anyone would be willing to answer a few questions or chat for 20–30 minutes, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance!
