Do I really have to look at 100 properties?

Investors have told me that the best way to get to know a market is to look at least 100 properties in the area. But this seems a little broad. Does looking at 100 properties mean walking around your market and take note of 100? Or does it mean to research 100 properties?

Hope the question made sense
