how to find a good real estate CPA

Question

I live in Texas about 45 min NW of Houston. I am trying to find a some one to do my taxes, send out my 1099s etc. I only have 4 doors so I don't need a real expensive adviser just someone who understands real estate.
Some one preferably I can build a relationship with and they can help me as I grow my portfolio. How would you guys go about finding someone like that?

@Chris Kimsey - I would recommend joining all of your local real estate facebook groups and asking for CPAs recommendations there. I've received a ton of good recommendations for local contractors, CPAs, etc from these platforms. Investors want to help each other out and it looks good on us when we send clients to companies we use. Always ask for a warm introduction if possible. Best of luck on your search!

You have plenty of options here of CPA's here on the BP forums. Search around and reach out. It's late, but I know that some are still taking on new clients.

@Chris Kimsey I agree with what people said about joining RE groups, getting referrals, etc. However, Good and Cheap aren't 2 words you'll find together regarding CPAs. Even with "only" 4 units, that's plenty of opportunity to miss out on tax savings or, even worse, have someone do things wrong that could result in fines and penalties if you get audited. Don't be afraid to spend money on things like CPAs, attorneys, etc, especially as you continue to grow. You also might have to make the drive to Houston, don't settle for someone local for convenience.

The biggest thing you have to vet from everyone is: "Do you own Real Estate Investments?" If the answer is no, you move on. If the answer is "No, but I know Real Estate!", you move on. If the answer is "No, but I have clients that have Real Estate...", you get the picture. I had to go through 4 CPAs before I found someone that knew what they were doing, and he's a Tax Preparer (not a CPA) who owned 100 doors at one time. He's not cheap, but I rest easier knowing that someone who is actually an investor helped us get things straightened out and is saving us money in the long run. Good luck!
