Luxury vinyl plank Is overrated???

Question

My experience with using luxury vinyl planks for three years now has been disappointing. With all the raving about this product, I thought it was the way to go and it’s definitely easier to put down than ceramic tile. It does seem to have issues coming undone. If there’s ever anywhere remotely that’s not perfectly level it will definitely try to come undone there as well. It is easily damaged as well.

So that’s my experience…. If you have used a product that seems to last a long time,  I’m all ears :-)

It’s like anything what quality lvp are you buying? If buying the $1/sf stuff then yes but buy a good mill thickness and you should be fine

I use the Coreluxe brand from LL Flooring and love it. As long as the floor is properly prepped and you leave the proper gaps along walls and breaks over 30' or so (or whatever your brand specifies), it's pretty bulletproof. I haven't had any issues with planks coming apart, and I install it myself.

We paid $2.50 a square foot for our house  and it was from a supplier that supposedly gave us a discount. It was like 12 mill thickness. And it’s been down less than a year and already coming apart in numerous places.

I have had very good luck with LVP.

You need to buy a quality product.

I flipped a 500k house 2 years ago and the owners requested LVP because it is very durable and they have a dog.

Any floating floor is meant to move a little. So, some minor separation of joints is normal. For example if a butt joint separates you can grab the end of the run at the wall with a special tool and pound it with a mallet back together. That would be normal maintenance not unlike having to occasionally stretch carpet to keep it tight.

If the joints are actually coming apart you have other issues. You mention uneven floors. With tile you would have done prep work to level the floors perhaps with self leveling concrete. Same should have been done here. Sounds like the product is less of an issue than the installation and preparation.

As for durability, LVP seems very good to me. For a landlord it is durable against some of the most common things to damage flooring moisture and smells. Durability to scratching etc will vary from product to product and with the thickness of the wear layer.
