Hi,

I have a property built in 1971. It has a 4 lane road local road (2 lanes one side and 2 lanes opposite side not state highway also has lot of signals seems maintained by county)behind the property. I have inner and outer wooden fence in the back seperating this house with that road. Seems previous owner built wooden inner fence. Seems county built outer fence. My neighbor do not have fence on sides but he has that outer fense. This wooden fence in bad shape. If I reach county do they repair outer fence. Can I put chain link fence instead of wooden inner fence as life is less for it and more maitenance and more rotting issues.  What are pros, cons, risks of changing innder wooden fence to chain link fence? Does county object i change inner wooden fence to chain link fence. I read online hybrid fence which is combination of metal and wood but I never tried it though.  Chain link fence i am thinking to put like 6 feet tall. Does wooden fence stop lot of car or engine noise of the road? IS it good idea to put both chain link as well as wooden fence later which may increase my cost double. Please advise.

You need to have the lot line surveyed before taking any action. I would guess that you are correct in assuming the inner fence is yours to do with as you please, but I would want to be sure it is within your lot by survey. The survey will also confirm that the outer fence is NOT yours. You also need to check local laws regarding allowable fencing. Height is always limited, and type may be. Of course if you are in an HOA their rules will determine as well. Visit a fencing specialty company to see what types of fencing might provide better sound deadening. You may want to consider, if allowable, a rock, brick, or concrete wall for sound problems.
