I have several older tenants probably paying half their monthly 'fixed' income to rent in a safe/secure area & they need to work part-time to supplement their lifestyle.

I think a lot of this, especially people on this site in particular are trying to be the captains for their ship and stay ahead of issues such as this. While the vast majority of people are nothing more than corks bobbing in the water being taken wherever the winds and waves take them. 

The compassionate thing to remember is that bad things happen to good people. The humble thing to remember is "but for the grace of God go I". Don't think for a second any of us are not capable of being reduced to living under a bridge.
