How to get rid of Mice?

I bought a rental property (2 family) in Harrison, NJ. I have a tenants moved in to the 2nd floor. My tenant informed me that the house has Mice. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them?

We are dealing with this as well.  Sounds like others have some good ideas but what (so far) has worked for us is the sonic repellers.  You just plug into the wall and it is it keeps them out because they are disturbed by the constant sound.  This might be a good option is your tenets aren't up for the daily dead mice!

Absolutely not with poison. They can die inside walls and ceilings causing a smell for months. Dont plug up holes with them still inside the wall either. Use either kill traps or one-way trap door traps where you can release the animal somewhere else.

seal any opening they could be entering through, put out traps, make sure the tenants are keeping their things put away and the property clean.  left out food is a sure way to get mice in my opinion.  the older the house the harder it is to get rid of them in my experience.

no just kidding

youll have to bait trap them don't poison them then youll have them in the house rotting

or you can get a sonic wave and let that run them out for a couple days then seal up the outside of the building really good with that rodent foam insulation

Get the BIg glue traps and put peanut butter in the middle of them .

Hi everyone, this is my first post but wanted to tell you how we managed to get rid of Mice.

I first noticed we had a mouse problem when laying in bed one night and I heard a scurrying sound in the Attic. A few days later I saw a brown mouse dart across the kitchen floor and under the washing machine.

I knew I had to do something about it and bought a load of classic mouse snap traps and some poison bait. For the next few days I kept coming down to find the bait from the traps gone and the poison bait too. I thought something must be working if the Mouse was eating the bait. Then it all went quiet for a few days. I guessed the mouse had died and I'd find it in some corner at some stage.

However, a couple of weeks later, I found a dead baby mouse near one of the traps. I was horrified as the mice had been breeding.

The next night, we were in our Lounge when we heard a horrendous sound from the ceiling above our heads, there were several of them running around in the space between the ceiling and the upstairs floorboards. I knew we had to do something and started to read up on how to get rid of them.

Mice can get through a gap the width of a pencil , so all holes need to be filled and plugged with steel wire pads and/or filler. In our case I found where they were getting in quite quickly. I went out into the Garden to look and straight away noticed a horrendous sight- they had chewed their way through our solid mahogany patio doors which is four inches thick! I quickly plugged the hole and also scattered cotton wool balls which had been soaked in peppermint Oil around the area too , as mice detest the smell.

Anyway, we tried various traps and baits, the humane ones and the type that look like a big block of cheese, nothing worked and the mouse sightings were becoming more frequent. Eventually we found a product called Victor Electronic Mousetrap. It was more expensive than anything else (about $40), but we were desperate.

When it arrived, I set the trap which was easy to do. Just put four batteries in, throw a piece of chocolate biscuit into the big 10 inch tunnel like structure and the idea was when the mouse runs in it gets Zapped by 8000 volts. It flashes and sounds a buzzer when something is caught.

By this stage, I was thinking nothing would work. A few minutes later my Wife said " you better go see to that trap thing of yours-it's obviously faulty." I went into the kitchen thinking maybe I'd put the batteries in the wrong way around. I examined the trap and there was a dead mouse in there. I was both amazed and elated we'd found something that had worked so effectively.

I reset the trap and literally 30 minutes later it'd caught another mouse. In the next few weeks it'd caught over twenty mice in total. We were horrified at the extent of our mouse infestation.

Mice carry dangerous diseases which can be potentially deadly to us. On top of that they cover everything in their urine and other bodily matter and make your home smell terrible.

We've been having this problem in one of our rentals/a rowhouse (connected to other houses) and have called 2 different exterminator co. --1st co. came 1 yr ago and in the spring we called a different co. as maybe the 1st co. didn't seal all the holes or what. The 2nd co. said they could not find anymore holes that the 1st co. didn't see. We've set baits, traps, etc. and were still having problems as all the holes that could be sealed were done but still the problem continued.  Long story short, our tenant found suggestion to put out peppermint oil on cotton balls all over the house. Make the smell strong and so far so good! No mice noise between the walls, no coming in!

I agree with others - do not use poison as the stench when they die behind the walls can be horrifying and you may actually have to open up a wall to find the rotting carcass and remove it.

You definitely need to find out where they are entering the building.  You'll be able to do this by following a trail of mouse poop.  You'll need to look all through the crawl space and attic as well as by any through holes such as dryer vents.  Plug the hole up with steel wool, then spackle over that.

I've used both live traps and re-released the mice into the wilderness (much to the consternation of the ex husband) and snap traps, which are very effective.  The cats seem to find one amusing and the other snacks.  (My cats were useless for actually catching mice.)

Additionally, mice do not like the smell of peppermint oil.  Feel free to use it liberally.  However, not as liberally as my ex-husband did.  We lived on the edge of open space and had a mouse problem just due to proximity of the field, not because of any housekeeping issues.  He got tired of them and went on the great mouse hunt, unbeknownst to me.

I left the house one day and when I got back, there was steel wool and spackle everywhere and my eyes watered for days from the peppermint oil.  He didn't realize that you could water it down and put it in spray bottle, so he just bought about a dozen bottles of the oil and just splashed it everywhere.

But... no more mice after that.  They figured out how to exit the building and never came back
