Where to buy cheap appliances?

Question

I just bought a rental in a C+ neighborhood in Saint Paul, MN. I am getting it ready for rent, and it needs a new stove, washer, and dryer. Anyone have any places they recommend in general for these types of things? Do people have decent luck with craigslist? Not looking for anything too high end...just functional and reliable!! Thanks!

I've bought many used appliances on Craigs list. Refrigerators I insist be plugged in and cold when I arive. Check the seals visually.  Stoves, if they look good I take them, easy to replace a burner or burner receptacle.  I like to pay around 100 for basic apartment grade. Also, if the refrigerator has an ice maker I remove it before delivery.my residents don't get ice makers.

I second the vote for Sears Outlet.

You can buy online from local inventory or go to the store that has the largest inventory.  I'm in Philadelphia and there are 5 different Sears Outlets nearby, including NJ and Delaware. The new scratch and dent stainless is great, especially when the scratches will be hidden or hard to see. I was able to jump up a couple quality levels on a recent kitchen, and still pay less than the $1600 for the basic stainless Frigidaire stove, dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator package one tends to see at discount appliance stores.

Hey home depot and lowes labor day sale ends today.  I'm heading over after work to pick up all new stainless for my kitchen, range, top/bottom fridge/ micro and dish washer for 1,500.  All Frigidaire.  You can go cheaper though, I'm buying for a rental in a good neighborhood.  I was looking at the scratch and dent places in Philly and the prices were about the same as these sale prices.

Is there a Habitat for Humanity ReStore near you?  It's one of my favorite places...

Basically, they pick up used furniture, appliances, screen, cabinets, etc. at no cost and then resell them at modest prices.

The stores near me have tons of used appliances in good condition a fraction of the cost to purchase new.  If you're lucky, you might even find a few brand new appliances with cosmetic damage.

I also buy used when possible, either from private sellers or a local outlet. Caution: we recently purchased a stove that had some live roaches in it, unknown until the stove was in the unit. Lucky the unit was empty and we were able to address it pretty quickly with an exterminator. Never had that problem before with refrigerators or dishwashers, so I may have bought my last used stove (maybe!).

If you are looking for new and you can deliver yourself ApplianceSmart is worth checking out.  Beyond that I've found that Menards and Home Depot are quite competitive with other sources, Menards will deliver to second floors (with an extra charge); I'm not sure about Home Depot as I haven't purchased any appliances from them lately.  In the old days I bought scratch and dent stuff but no longer consider that approach as one I wish to follow... I'm not sure what you consider a C+ neighborhood but if I was worried about destruction of appliances I might pursue the path Jordan mentions above.
