Duplex Submeter - How's the Laundry Work?

Fellow BPers:

I am trying to take the next step and acquire a duplex.  I've come across a few with the electric sub metered.  Two questions:

- If I'm looking to hold long term, would it be wise to sub meter H20?  If so, what have you experienced for typical cost?

- Many of the duplex have a shared washer/dryer.  I've seen separate outlets for the dryer, so the tenant just switches the plug.  But how would water for the washer work?  Any info is greatly appreciated!!
