You will have to test and prove that the sensor was faulty and not in fact something you did, for example stop under the door for extended period of time.

nope the damage was due to the fact the garage door wasn't working properly I wouldn't just roll over on this one..

check it out and put it in writing and on the garage door or by controller it should list name of company that services it..

Report the damage and see what happens what ya got to lose.. Put a sign up by mail box warning and asking if others have had damage because the door is closing to soon.. you could be one of many. If a kid got stuck under that they could get killed.. Next is call city building inspector and report the garage door..

Is this a common garage door that many cars use or a single one just for your garage spot.

It makes a difference and I'd submit claim to your insurance and then get their advice to go after the lanldlord for damages.. I managed a large complex garage parked over 30 cars and this happened once in a while and landlord usually paid the claim..

Needless to say don't use it until the garage door is re calibrated with the sensor.

I suspect it's more likely due to a faulty operator than a faulty sensor. As a Landlord, I would be happy to repair the damage if you could provide proof it was the sensor's fault.

Before I mention this to the LL that they are responsible make sure your car was blocking the sensors, in my homes the sensors are too low to see the body of the car and will only obstruct the sensors line of sight if the tires are in between.  This is one good reason for tenant insurance.

You got no comprehensive coverage on the car? I don't think it is the landlord's liability. (But his liability insurance will pay for attorneys to defend him, should you sue.)

Do you have renter's insurance? Many rental contracts require the tenant to get it ($10 a month), but few tenants actually do it. Renter's insurance would probably cover the car.

I know someone (a renter) who's car got messed up when a tree fell on it; he bought renter's insurance and reported the claim the next day. They paid.
