Whole House Water Filter?

Question

I couldn't find anything on this specific thing when I searched so here it is: the water at my duplex has a very strong chlorine taste. It's also upsetting her kids' skin because it is so harsh, so a simple drinking water filter isn't a favored solution. I am going to test the chlorine levels in the water this Friday, but the tenant has asked about a whole-house water filter to reduce the chlorine levels. She says she will pay for it, but wants to take it with her when she leaves in June.

Does anybody have any experience with this kind of request? I could do the installation myself, but then I have to install it just so to uninstall it again 6 months from now when she leaves. Or should I have her pay for a plumber to install and uninstall it? I haven't brought that up yet but wanted feedback before I do -- I think it would be acceptable and either way won't hurt to ask.

Why not just pay for it yourself and keep it? Sounds like you'll need it in the long run anyway. Plus you can write it off.

I think you should install it by yourself if you have an experience or you can have the services of a plumber.

For a duplex, you won't need more than 5 gallons a minute flow rate. If the tenants only concern is chlorine, you can install a simple big blue carbon filter like the one below. A plumber will usually charge for 1 hour as this is an easy job. Make sure to get it installed with a 3-way bypass so that even if you remove the filter, you can still have water to the apartment by turning on the bypass valves.

US EPA requires city water companies to have 1 ppm of chlorine concentration at the consumers faucet so that there is no danger from waterborne microorganisms. So if your tenant doesn't like to drink or bathe in chlorine, she should pay for the filter and installation.

@Joe Arida not sure exactly why it failed so quickly. They never gave me that answer. Probably more expensive for them to figure that out then just give me a refund. I went with a more expensive hydrogen peroxide system. 2 months seems solid.

@Josh C. Why exactly did you have to install something different? Did the high iron levels cause the filter not to work or die more quickly, or was it not filtering the iron out when it was supposed to be? I am glad to hear they were good to work with.

@Dave Van Horn I was thinking about this too, it looks like there are some nice filters that last about 10 years which aren't too expensive. I was looking at some of the Aquasana Rhino Pro filters (not softener). I am not sure that I have space for it though the whole thing is about 44" long and the utility room is a little tight. I'll be taking measurements to see what is feasible.

@Gregory J. I will definitely be testing the water and checking the softener as well. I currently live about a half mile away so I'll compare the results between the properties. From what I see there are filters which will remove most of the chlorine without needing reverse osmosis. I hadn't thought of renting one so I will check that out too.
