Tenant Screening - Thinking outside the box

I wanted to get some new ideas on tenant screening.  Obviously I would love to do credit/background checks on all tenants, but in this area it is a C market and not everyone has a SSN to run a check on.  So has anyone done something in this type of market that has been successful?
