Issues with a Landlord

Tammy Whited
Posted

Got a question for anyone who is willing to read and answer. Ok, we are renting a home in Texas, we had to break the lease, but we worked hard and found a new tenant. We have done nothing but be cordial with the landlord and they have been very condesending. Now they tell us that we have to hand the keys over to the new tenants, and they will let workers come in and do work. And after 30 days they will send us the rest of the deposit. Ok, what if they decide to do some bad things to the house, or make up stuff, how can we recant this? Someone please tell us what our rights are as renters!

Thank You,
Tammy

Is there anything in the lease that covers this situation? For example, on my standard lease, I allow the tenant to break it with 60 days notice and a one-month penalty payment.

If it's not in your lease, what is your state laws about this situation?

At very least, take lots of pictures and ensure that you keep a copy of the move-in inspection form (you have right, right?). That will allow you to document the condition of the property when you moved in and when you moved out.
