Basement apartments on Long Island NY

My wife and I are looking for a home is Suffolk County, NY with the potential of or having a finished basement apartment for purposes of offsetting our mortgage payments/taxes every month. Would like any advice on what to look for and what constitutes a legal basement apartment. Thanks.

I can confirm one thing... Long Island is the land of the illegal basement apartments. Cost of living is insane, and every one is illegally renting out a part of the house to make the bills. I have seen this in many of the communities with the "mini mansions".
