Idea back yard for 2 bed, 1 bath duplex

We have a duplex that sits on two lots.. the back yard, that is basically the second lot, is fenced in and shared at this time.

I want to separate the back yard area and make a small privacy section for each side. What is the idea sq footage or size of a back yard/ outside area?

Fenced in or open?

Just looking for suggestions..
