Is it customary to provide a refrigerator for rentals. My wife and I are new so we're just curious.

Depends. There is usually a general expectations based on the city and rental class. For A class renters may expect everything including a Jacuzzi and on C and D rentals you can give them 4 walls and a floor.

fridge and oven . I throw in a cheap microwave for a nice touch and it helps people get up and going . Mine are lower income rentals though

I provide stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer, and sometimes microwave (when its set up for a microwave hood etc). Washers and dryers are above and beyond the norm in my area, but I feel its a good "point of difference" for my units to attract better tenants. Also, do, I want tenants moving in large bulky machines and hooking up gas lines to dryers etc? Then there is the difference in perceived value. I can find a used washer or dryer for $100-150 to replace any that fail. I also have a truck, van, and a maintenance person. So, getting an appliance swapped out is not hard for me. For a tenant they will perceive appliances as costing more, being more difficult to move, etc. So, to them the appliance being in place is a significant value and to me not that much of a cost.

@Steve Lawrence Sr. this is totally dependent on the area, and even the sub market. I recently had a conversation with a property management company in Chicago that told me that air conditioning was an absolute must for my building in Berwyn. I knew that they were wrong, ignored them, and have had zero issues hitting my underwritten rent targets while filling units. If I had the same property in the south, I am sure AC would be a lot more important! Research your local market and look at other rentals. What do they offer? What kind of tenants can they attract? Can adding one appliance help you get a better tenant?

The Oven/stove and dishwasher are pretty standard to include. I also provide a Fridge. I can usually pick up a nice used one for $400 or buy a new one on sale for $1,000.

@Steve Lawrence Sr. I try to only do Fridge, AC, and Oven. I try to get rid of washers, dryers, and dishwashers. More to break, more to fix. This of course depends on your property. If A/B property your tenants are going to be different if you have a C property
