Will hamster consider pet in rental?

Hi,

I need some advice whether hamster consider pet? My rental have no pets policy but prospective tenant said they have hamster. Have you ever had any hamster damage the property? Thanks

Personal experience here.  When I was a kid we were in a rental and I had a hamster.  It escaped its cage and wasn’t recaptured for several days, during which it chewed up about a 4’x2’ area of carpet under/behind bookcases to make a nest.  Your mileage may vary.

I agree with JasonD, cage or bowl typically not considered a pet. Although we did have tenants who had multiple caged snakes and we charged them a pet deposit, but one or two small caged animals is probably OK

Personally, I wouldn't consider a hamster, fish or lizard a pet as they're typically in their enclosure and not out running around on the floor; though I'm sure some other landlords would disagree and consider them pets, considering it a lease violation.

Any animal would be a pet.  Chances are they will let the hamster out.  They are rodents and can do a lot of damage if they get in the walls.

I rented to a couple with 2 dwarf rabbits that "never leave their cage.'

Somehow they managed to chew up the baseboards.

I need to get my photos handy...that would make these replies more interesting...

Some of those hamster/gerbil/type pets like to shave wood.  I think it is part of their desire to build a nest.

feet.  It wasn't clear cut, it was little trails of chewed carpet over the area.
