Tenants having roommates

I have a 2 bed 1 bath apartment currently being rented by 1 person. The tenant wanted to bring in a friend to occupy the other room and help pay the rent. I was planning on still collecting the full rent from the original tenant and have the roommate just pay him. Should I run a background check on the new roommate?

Yea run a background check & put the roommate on the lease. As far as you are concerned the roommate is a tenant the same way the original tenant is. That said you just worry about collecting 100% of the rent. Doesn't matter to you who pays what or how they divvy it up. Make it clear 100% of the rent is due on the due date. If 100% of the rent isn't paid 100% of the tenants get evicted.
