Fix up costs

I am spending a fortune at Home Depot to get my rental house up to use. I understand I will add the cost of the new roof to basis, but do you all really add costs for leaky faucets, broken bathroom fans, nonfunctioning electrical outlets, etc. to the basis? Is there a way to expense these even though they are to get the property up to the point I can rent it out? This could be a bookkeeping pain.
