R22 (Freon) AC unit Replacement Plan of Action

Nick Kimmel
Posted

I rent a house in Jacksonville, FL with two 14-year-old R22 type AC units, one for the downstairs and one for the bonus room upstairs. I understand starting January 1, 2020 I will not be allowed to make repairs that require the addition of Freon. I have an estimate to replace the downstairs with a Goodman 3.5 ton, 14 SEER unit for $3200 and the upstairs with a Goodman 1.5 ton, 14 SEER unit for $2800.

1) Should I service the Freon in December of 2019 and ride it out as long as I can?

2) Replace the downstairs unit now and ride out the upstairs unit?

3) Bite the bullet and just replace both units now?

I appreciate any advice and guidance with this issue.

Thanks,

Nick

Relax... They already have a synthetic version that is cheaper and can be used for R22 that this new law is not affecting.
