i'm talking about the general 12mil wear layer kind.

I just saw this rental listing on zillow, and its hardwood floor is scratched to hell >>

so I question whether LVP can even hold up.

You can destroy everything, but LVP is pretty tough. We use it in kitchens and bathrooms. It is warmer tha tile, installs much faster and will not crack on impact (like from a dropped iron skillet).

We reifinish HWF if we have them or install LVP if there is only subfloor. Keep in mind that there is a big quailty difference between cheap and medium priced LVP.

I found a coating product I've never heard of before.

It's called Betco Hard as Nails, which claims it can be rolled onto vinyl to marginally increase wear resistance.

I wonder if anyone ever recoats their vinyl planks the same way they do with hardwood floors.

And just to follow up on the above, on a quality LVT with a good AO finish I have smoothed the edge of a quarter before in front of my dealers.

i went to Floor and Decor store and scratched their expensive vinyl plank with a sharp object, and they all scratched.

The only thing that didn't scratch was ceramic/porcelain tile.

The answerto your question is ...it depends how the LVP was made. A 6mil wearlayer for housing will suffice if it has a good FINISH. Weralayer and finish are two different things. The wearlayer is just clear coat over the color to protect it and has really nothing to do with scuff or scratch resistance. If the product you are considering does not have  a finish...run do not walk to the door. Finishes are one of three types; urethane, urethane with aluminum oxide, or urethane with ceramic bead/marble dust. The latter two have a harder surface for scratch resistance. A smooth product will scratch easier no matter which finish you have so look for one with texture. Use the old try to scratch it with a quarter method. Better products will clean the edge of the quarter. A textured surfacr you are walking on the highs of the texture not the entire floor so more difficult to scratch hope that all helps
