What do you do with Skunks?

Question

Hello! I'm brand new here on the forums.

My tenants just reached out to me that a skunk has been coming by pretty often. They are terrified of skunks. I called a wildlife control company and they quoted me $250 to get rid of the skunk ($125 trap and $125 relocate). What's to say it won't come back?

What do you all recommend?

@Adam Stetina mice will come back unless they are taken 2-3 miles away! I would think tha skunk will find it's way back unless you take it 5-10 miles away. The wildlife person will know.

As an aside when I was a kid we had 2 hounds that were re-homed and found their way back from 50 miles took them 2 days!

I had a skunk make a home under my front porch.  I took two boxes of moth balls and poured under the porch.  The skunk and the family left.  Go figure they don’t like the smell.

There are some things in life that are just worth paying for, and for me getting rid of a skunk would be one of them.  While I would gladly pay 250 not to have to do it myself, call around because in my experience with things like this prices can vary wildly so shop around.  The alternative is to spend a few bucks at Tractor Supply and trap and move it yourself but again sometimes things are just worth paying for.

Place moth balls or your can put lemon or orange peels in the yard. They are natural repellent of skunk.

I've heard the moth ball trick works. But that price for trapping and relocation sounds very reasonable, for my area at least.

I would only advocate for humane methods and highly disagree that shooting animals in the head is part of being a landlord...

Thank you everyone for your tips and tricks! They have been very helpful. I'm trying to find out where the skunk has been coming from and I will try the general consensus idea of moth balls.

If it fails, the wildlife control company is one call away and they can be here as early as tomorrow!

@Adam StetinaA purpose-made skunk trap costs $60. I'd buy one, set it in place, bait it, trap the skunk, and then shoot it in the head with a .22. Same for assorted raccoons, possums, woodchucks, snakes...

It's not a nice part of being a landlord, but you have to get rid of vermin.
