Section 8 Screening and Lease

Should I still follow the screening best practices of calling previous land lords and conducting a background/credit check if the tenant is Section 8. 

Is the lease still valid, worth dedicating time and due diligence since the section 8 agreement is a lease in itself.

You screen every single applicant exactly the same way, no exceptions. This protects you from fair housing violations and it nearly guarantees you a solid tenant. A crappy tenant who pays rent is going to be much more expensive than a bit of vacancy while you wait for a good tenant.
