Tenant Parking Issues

Melissa T.
Posted

Hi,

I am the owner of a multi-family property. Each unit is provided two off street parking spaces. Last year one of our tenant to asked if they could put a small landing in the backyard, as a little patio area. We said ok. He put a 10 x 12 deck coming off his back door as a deck area for his unit.

We rented the third floor recently and these tenants have two cars. Because the first floor took up so much of the yard with the deck he built there is not room for their two cars and the third floors two cars.

The first floor is upset and asking us to tell the unit upstairs to put their cars on the street. The first floor tenants are not ideal tenants as it is, but now what do I do about the parking?

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,

Melissa

Seems simple tell the 1st floor they can park on the street. They chose to build a deck where their parking goes...so third floor shouldn't lose their parking because of it. You can also tell first floor to revise/remove the deck to resolve the issue. In hind sight you should have better managed what it was he wanted to build there, but today's issue is to resolve the parking issue.
