I just bought my first new rental duplex. I am planning on living in one side and renting out the other side. Any advice on remodeling the following areas: kitchen and the bathroom?
1) The kitchen is an awkward layout - notice the fridge is sandwiched in the middle between the stove and the countertop? You can open the fridge door but not to its fullest capacity. What would be cost-effective way to change the layout?
2) The bathroom is livable, but there is no storage under the sink and the mirror is too high with the soap dish in the way. I am VERY petite - I cannot see myself in the mirror. Do I remove the white tiles? But if I do, should I remove all the white tiles in the bathroom? What are possible solutions?
@Evina Nonato Congratulations! those are both awkward placements, I imagine there is a window to the Left of the sink where the counter ends? Best of luck but looks like a great start!
In the kitchen, to the left of the sink is not a window, it's a door to the backyard.
The bathroom is a pretty easy fix. Remove a few tiles below the current mirror and place a new mirror that extends farther down. Replace the vanity with a standard cabinet design that includes storage.
The kitchen would be a major expense. The fridge should probably be placed to the far right at the end of the wall. That would give you more counter space next to the stove, the door could open completely on the fridge, and the fridge would be easier to move in/out for cleaning. But that would require new cabinets, new counter space. You could also move the fridge to the space you are standing in when the photo was taken, but that would leave a gaping hole in your cabinet/counter.
I would leave the kitchen alone until it's due for a full makeover and then design the kitchen from scratch.
