Landlord charging for cabinet replacement

Sree Km
Posted

I moved out of an apartment recently and I got a bill from landlord for cabinet replacement for $3000. Couple of cabinet doors were damaged when I lived, so I was expecting a bill for replacing those, but I got one for replacing the entire kitchen cabinets. Can the landlord do that? I suspect they were not able to find the same exact color doors to replace, so they want to replace the entire cabinets and charge me for it. Would I be liable for the entire cabinet replacement? I tried to fight with them, but they're not ready to negotiate. What are my options?

Ask the landlord how the cost was determined.  You're entitled to know.  It is reasonable to expect that all the cabinet doors may have needed to be replaced if matches could not be found.  My recommendation would be to question the charge and ask for a detailed accounting. And, next time, repair the damage when it happens; carry Renter's Insurance - it's a cheap date with a lot of benefit.
