Does CPA need to be in property state?

Question

I bought a short term rental this year in North Carolina and live in Florida. I would like to find a good CPA who can help my with my taxes this year and help with tax/investment strategies moving forward. Do I need to hire someone in the state I live in or the state my property is in? Any recommendations?

@Jennifer SneedIt is not required that your CPA live in the state that you live in or the state where your property is located in.However, it is good for that person to be knowledgeable and have experience understanding the state tax laws in the state you live and where your property are located in.The good thing about Florida is that it does not have a state income tax.

There are several active CPA's here on the forums. You can search around the forums or use the network tab to find one that specializes in real estate.

I don't believe North Carolina has a complex tax code that differs from federal much so shouldn't be much of a problem to have a CPA that doesn't live there. FL doesn't have a state tax so the question is do you want someone local or are you open to remote CPAs. This site has a lot of good remote CPAs on it.

Hehe, +1. Nope. Find someone who has actually properties rather than someone who attended a course on the subject.

My CPA is in WA State but my property is in Idaho. He has 36 doors so knows all the ins and outs of real estate taxes.
