420 Friendly Vacation Rentals

420 Friendly Vacation Rentals

In the spirit of the Holiday today I've always been curious if there are any operators of short term or vacation rentals that are specifically or intentionally serving the 420 community?  Obviously there are many states with vacation destinations that have also passed cannabis legalization, interested to hear if anyone is marketing themselves as a "420 friendly" rental?  In my mind there would be an interesting niche here especially if the host provided essentials like glob mops, iso, trays, papers, etc.

Marketing your home as '420 friendly' would do more harm than good.

Somebody who is visiting an area where recreational cannabis use is legal is going to use cannabis in your rental whether you advertise it that way or not.

But by putting that language in the description, you are going to "scare away" some tenants who aren't interested in partaking, or who still associate the medicine with a negative connotation.

I would worry that mentioning 420 in the ad would turn away your average STR client unless you have a really unique space that brings a unique guest. If someone were to ask me if they could, I would be receptive as I already have the Ozone Generator.

My partner would be 100% down for staying in a 420 friendly STR. I generally ask if outside smoking is ok if it isn't specifically mentioned in the ad and leave it at that.

as long as you keep it outside, I don't see why owners would have a problem with it

It would definitely make people think twice about bring children to your home, especially after the death of a toddler at a STR in FL. But maybe you're not marketing to families?

Also, you didn't mention where a possible "420 friendly" STR would be, but I'm guessing you are aware that Ohio state law make recreational use illegal.

@Michael K Gallagher hi there. Interesting question. Especially on today's date 4-20-23;) I'm in Colorado where recreational cannabis is legal. I would talk to an attorney about this as you wouldn't want to provide something (papers, etc) that contributes to say, a fire, in your STR. And from a marketing perspective, you wouldn't want to limit yourself either.

What I've seen and look for is "outside smoking ok" or "420 friendly" - or the equivalent and leave it at that as @Joel Case said.

I hate to be that guy but pot is not officially legal anywhere in the US.  Sure states can enact laws that say different and choose not to prosecute but federal law trumps state and just in case the winds turn I wouldn’t want my business to actively be promoting it.  While I may not agree with the current legal status and think we should just leave people alone and focus on bigger societal issues the laws are what they are.

Probably not. Weed today is a far cry from weed in the 70's. Much more potent and people tend to mix fentanyl in it. And people lose track of their stuff, it falls on the floor, gets left in the carpet, and takes only two grains to kill. You would not even know it had been mixed in because it is so tiny. Weed from the 70'd maybe, weed from today, not on anyone's life.

    Depends on Location.

Putting something that informs non-smokers that they can expect a comfortable environment free from the smell of smoke would be ideal, and it could potentially increase the number of customers who choose to frequent the establishment.

I think there is a difference between merely "420 is okay" and what the OP is describing here.  Sounds like OP is wanting to go all-in with it, basically theme the whole place out with it (and provide exotic supplies) akin to the way some people do with Airbnb sex dungeons, where essentially the idea is people are seeking it out explicitly and you're ONLY catering to that crowd.  You're okay with families never staying there because you're planning on staying pretty booked with your specific guest avatar.

I suppose it could be worth a try, but I would think the main barrier would just be the avatar of renter you would need.  Without any intent to offend, as I've indulged plenty of times, the avatar of guest that would want an over the top in their face 420 themed place is less likely to be a wealthy crew.  That's not to say there aren't plenty of well to do people that enjoy partaking, but rather that they're less likely to want an over the top in your face place with it.

So for instance, a Colorado ski town where lots of college or just out of college aged kids like to go on ski trips something like this could definitely appeal to them, and there would be LOTS of that type of traveler.  But the problem is that kind of group is usually a very budget conscious group as well.  So even if you can keep occupancy high the ceiling on nightly rate may be limited in a 2-season market with very high home prices.

From the recovering drug dealer I tried to help, when I hired him to work on my fix & flip. Very nice guy, talented, but got hooked. I had to fire him when he relapsed. His associate who also worked for me, a recovering drug user and former customer of his, who is now clean, spotted the merchandise & complained to me and wouldn't work if he stayed on the job. In the aftermath of the cleanup we found his little stashes. He confessed, apologized and said you only need a couple of grains in a joint and off you go.

The illegally used fentanyl most often associated with recent overdoses is made in labs. This synthetic fentanyl is sold illegally as a powder, dropped onto blotter paper, put in eye droppers and nasal sprays, or made into pills that look like other prescription opioids.

Some drug dealers are mixing fentanyl with other drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA. This is because it takes very little to produce a high with fentanyl, making it a cheaper option. This is especially risky when people taking drugs don’t realize they might contain fentanyl as a cheap but dangerous additive.

The Connecticut report was not factual, they only found one case of fentanyl laced cannabis: https://www.nbcconnecticut.com...

Your own link to the New York page shows that it's likely fear mongering. There have been few cases of actual cannabis tested and found to have been laced with fentanyl. It's the normal cannabis fear mongering we have heard for ages. At least 18% of Americans are believed to use cannabis, around 50 million people. Compare that to the number of actual verified cases of cannabis being laced with fentanyl and you are looking at a miniscule amount, approximately one in a million if the information you posted was actually true, which it isn't. 1 in 1,000,000 with fake numbers, 1:50,000,000 with real numbers. That's instances per user, now consider that the average user partakes in cannabis multiple times a week and your numbers shrink even more. The one instance in Connecticut is the only verified case of lab testing confirming fentanyl in cannabis. Don't spread fake news and hearsay.

We've seen too many death in san francisco, people is selling all your mentioned above in the front of city's building.

Obviously opening my home to stranger (that's crazy enough from 1999 perspective) and opening them to smoke (anything), then anything can happen, all that just for few dollars more.

I used to have airbnb renter that smokes weed and he used to smoke it inside, he just doesn't care, it is emotionally tiring for landlord to tell not to smoke instead -  the next day he brings his five friend smking outside and I got neighbor calling me LOL the subsequent drama is not worth it.

Nope, like @John Underwood, I don't want anyone smoking anywhere on my property let alone weed.

Regarding fentanyl laced cannabis, fentanyl is very water soluble so it would be very easy to lace smoking weed let alone edibles. There isn't a lot of evidence that weed has been laced with fentanyl but there is a long history of it with other drugs.

IE - Cocaine, PCP, ketamine, formaldehyde, heroin, LSD, meth, and others. That kind of thing has been going on for a long time.

Our house is in Idaho and it is illegal there.

Hey Michael, I've worked personally with a lot of STR clients and have to say - I personally wouldn't mention 420 friendly but if they wanted to do it outside of the house, it should be no issue. I feel like advertising it as 420 would narrow your target audience by quite a bit and I don't know if personally that's the audience you're going for.
