They're not really considered STR since it's a commercial building/space, but many are turning older run-down motels into beautiful properties and running them as a STR would be. Not only does this save a lot in expenses, but guests love the self-check in and check out!

No, they are considered commercial structures.

Having said that, you do see a lot of hotels/motels putting their rooms on AirBNB and VRBO.

We got our last STR on VRBO in a hotel/resort in Bend OR.
