STR Regulation Database

Matthew Evans
Posted

I'm building an app with a nationwide database of STR/vacation rental regulations. My goal is to automate the process of collecting regulations at the state/county/city/neighborhood level and create a website presenting this info in a filterable format (e.g. a map). For example, a user could filter to neighborhoods in Colorado with an annual STR license fee less than $1000 and which currently has no waitlist for licenses.

Are there any existing websites or data products in this space which deliver this level of granularity?

Also, I'd love feedback on if this dataset would be useful in your own STR acquisition workflows. Any suggestions? Tweaks or different directions/angles you'd suggest?

Talk to Rent Responsibly, they might have insights. That said, ss far as I know...no. 1773 different legal municipalities in Michigan alone- everyone gets to pick how they regulate and no standard place or way to capture that. Plus some just say they arent allowed because zoning regs would have to explicitly allow. Plus state level- which is a hair easier. Some states regulate at county level too Taxes are often separate legislation or regulations than STR stuff. It feel like a tough nut to crack, but if you can- amazing.
