House rules work best before they're needed.

A host shouldn't wait until a guest breaks a rule to explain the rule.

Clear expectations should come before arrival.

Think about the areas that commonly create confusion:

• Smoking policies
• Extra guests
• Noise
• Parties and gatherings
• Check-in and checkout
• Parking

The goal isn't to make guests feel restricted.

It's to make expectations clear for everyone.

When guests know the rules early, there is less room for confusion later.

And when expectations are communicated professionally, you're not just protecting the property.

You're protecting the guest experience too.

Good hospitality doesn't mean having no boundaries.

It means communicating those boundaries clearly and respectfully.

I agree. A lot of problems with tenants can be avoided just by being clear up front. It’s a lot easier to point back to something that was clearly communicated before they moved in than try to enforce a rule after there’s already a problem.
