I'm a newbie, and for my first investment I'm gearing towards an out of State STR, where I can also use as a vacation home and depending where I'm at in my life, retire there. Is an STR a bad idea as a first investment.....

Learning to crawl is like managing a LTR in your town.

Learning to walk is like managing a STR in your town.

Learning to fly is like managing a STR in another town.

Learn how to crawl and walk, then learn how to fly.  The rewards get better each time you advance a level.  Skillset also needs to be advanced more at each level.
