STR with garage door opener: how to automate?

Hello, all! We are purchasing an STR with a garage that comes with one remote. I'm concerned that a renter might accidentally take a remote home with them. Please share ideas on how to solve this issue. We are fine with allowing them to use the garage, but don't want to lose the remote....

Yes, keypad is the easiest and I have only had one person ever leave with the garage remote and they mailed it right back. Additionally, you can covert most any newer model opener with a system like this to be able to control via app on your phone.

@Rachel Kokosenski keypad is the way to go. We don’t give the remote out. Or we will let the tenant have the remote with a deposit. Sounds silly but it makes sure we either get it back or can cover a new one.

Can't you add a keypad?  Google search for keypad for liftmaster or garage door keypad opener, then you don't have to give them the remote at all.

Like previously mentioned get a keypad, but also we use the Chamberlain MyQ device/app.  I always know if the garage is open or not and can force close it remotely if need be.

You keep the remote. Install a keypad on the exterior of the garage for under $50. Problem solved.

@Rachel Kokosenski we put a key pad by the door and do not give them the remote.

The secret to removing problems in anything is reducing complexity. If you have a remote that the guest can accidentally take with them, there is risk of someone taking it. If you have no remotes, that is one less potential problem.

One thing to remember if you use a keypad is unless you change it after every renter someone could get back inside. Even though a button might be more complicated at least it would be harder to duplicate/copy. I would even suggest a button inside the house to open and close the garage.

You'd think a deposit would help, but we've still lost tons of garage door openers, key fobs, etc., even with a sign on the door that says "Want your $100 back? Don't forget to leave the garage door opener!"
