Hello everyone!

My name is Aaron.  I am a native Porltander and know the area very well.  I enjoy the outdoors, geology, geography, beaches, whales, kayaking and the list keeps going.  I am very excited about life and am ready to start a new chapter in real estate.

I've been in the corporate finance world for 15+ years and hold an MBA from the University of Colorado.  I know that this job will not help me achieve my goals in life.  

My goal is not to get rick quick, or follow gurus to the pot of gold.  It is instead a path to retiring comfortably and early, so that I can spend more time with family and travel.  To start, I want to find a reasonably priced duplex or triplex that I can live in and reduce my rent.  Then I want to save like crazy so I can fund the next opportunity.  I know I am in an expensive area which poses a lot of challenges to overcome.  I appreciate any advice in getting started in this market or nearby.

I have listened to nearly 70 of the bigger pockets podcasts in the past month and am ready to start meeting people here in the forums.  Education comes first, then mentor, then action.

Welcome to Biggerpockets!

Our goal is to retire at age 42 and 44 (15 years) when my husband has the opportunity to retire from the Navy. So I totally understand about your goal of retiring early :) I also have an MBA and an undergraduate degree in Finance with a minor in Accounting.

Our model is buy and hold real estate through pure rentals, personals turned rentals all being class A properties so smaller margin but lower expenses. WE got started through renting out personal homes.

This site has tons of great sources. Check out the Blogs, and forums too. Biggerpockets community is truly awesome through their diversity (buy and hold, wholesalers, bird dogs, commerce, developers, flippers, agents, etc). Another unique resource is peoples personal blogs/websites that can be found in the signature. Within the above "groups" everyone has create their own niches. Many of us have create a website/blog giving more information about our model, etc.

My blog is about self management from a distance, personal properties turned rentals, operating nicer houses on smaller margins, full time job with rentals on the side, etc. 

There is tons of great information and people.

    Welcome Aaron.  You certainly sound like you have a strategy in mind.  Learn all you can fro. The people on BP.  There is a wealth of knowledge here for sure.

    Welcome to BP @Aaron Shade  ! Thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. I think a great way to begin using BP is to read the Bigger Pockets Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Real Estate Investing as Josh and Brandon did a great job with it. And now that you're here we'd love to see you be an active member of the BP community so be sure to set up Keywords Alerts for your local area such as "Portland" or "Vancouver" if you're looking to find potential opportunities for investing, education in a subject, or other members in your area.

    Use the Find Members area to network with other members who are local to you or are in an area you're wanting to invest in. Good to see you're listening to the pod casts.  There's always gold in them. 

    If you want to find events that are going on in your area be sure to check out the Real Estate Events and Happenings area of BiggerPockets. Here you can find meet ups of local BP members or other groups that get together, network, and have education about real estate investing. Some of these events they might try to sell you into a mentoring program or try to sell you something else. In most cases you'll find everything you need here on BP so don't spend any extra money elsewhere. There are many great members here on BP who are tremendous resources of information and will help you greatly. And there are some who are just here to try to sell you something so don't be naive to it. Their true intentions come out eventually.

    Be sure to read through the rules of the forums here. How you'll get the most out of BiggerPockets is to understand how to navigate through it and understand that it's a two way street. You'll get out of it what you put into it so become active and help us grow the community and wealth of knowledge that's already here.

    That was a really nice introduction, Aaron. So nice to see a fellow whale lover! Part of the reason I invest is to lend a hand to the lads and ladies at Sea Shepherd! I like your very level-headed business plan, and I wish you the very best in achieving it. Portland does feel too expensive at times, but it's a lovely spot for sure. Maybe the chaps will do a Portland podcast one of these days..?

    Aaron, welcome to BP!  I'm about an hour north of you, in a lower priced market.  But we hope to move to Seattle one day, which will be a high priced market like Portland.  I'd also love to buy a duplex or small complex as our primary residence.  For now we are focusing on low income buy and hold.

    Welcome@Aaron Shade it sounds like you have a good financial base which helps in the Portland market. At this time it is a seller's market so a little tougher to get things to go your way around here. The people that are doing well are the ones that can create value like rehabbers and people that market for properties.
