Hello Bigger Pockets -

My name is Ben and I got started listening to the BP podcast on my drive to work last month. I'm currently renting in Boston, but interested in entering the world of multifamily properties. In particular, I would love to move into a multifamily, probably a duplex, in the next year or so. The greater Boston area (Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, Malden, Winchester, Watertown, etc) seems to be a pretty difficult market to get started in, so any ideas/advice would always be appreciated.

My longer term goals are financial freedom with the ability to live off of cashflow and work because I love my job.

What advice do you have for a would-be first time real estate investor looking to live in a relatively expensive area?

Welcome @Ben G.  Always good to have more Bens here!  I bought a three family in Malden last year after looking for a long time.  I know things are tougher now, but there are deals out there!  Make sure to know your numbers and don't let your emotions take over your decisions.

My best advice for getting involved in this market would be to meet as many investors as possible.  Meetups are a great way to do this.  Some great ones in the area if you're interested in learning more are Black Diamond (Ann Bellamy), Justin Silverio's meetup, and the Boston Wealth Builders (Willie Mandrell).

Best of luck and let me know if you ever want to talk more!

Ben
