Hi everyone. I'm Tim McKelvey from Palmdale CA. My son introduced me to Bigger Pockets and Rich Dad Poor Dad back in March. I immediately joined the site and started listening to podcasts and reading about 20 highly recommended books. I became really excited and tried to find a way to invest before my W2 income goes away. In July, I bought my first rental property, a REO townhouse on the other side of the country. So I am just now getting active on the site.

I am an R&D supervisor and coming up on semi-retirement.  So I am clearly getting started a little later in life.  I'm hoping to continue investing in buy-and-holds with a goal of 5-10 doors in the next 3 1/2 years.  Just looking for this to augment my pension for a more robust retirement.

Well, enough for my basic intro.  I look forward to chatting, and perhaps working with some of you in the future.

Hi Tim! Welcome to the site. I'm down in Venice now but when I first moved to California I moved to Palmdale/Lancaster because I was with Lockheed up there.

Where did you buy the townhouse and how is it doing? REO is advantageous being on the other side of the country!

Careful, real estate investing can get addicting once you've read Rich Dad Poor Dad! ;)

@Jonna Weber thanks for your welcoming words. This is so funny, I am listening to all the BP podcasts in reverse order ( I started at 256). On my drive home tonight, episode 80 came on with none other than Jonna Weber. You have a great story. Very inspiring/motivating. Thanks again! Tim
@Ali Boone , thanks for the kind words and intro. I bought in the Coastal Carolina (NC) area. My son is a broker and property manager there. He is the one who introduced me to BP. Since he has a property management company, he has some go-to contractors that he trusts. So it was "relatively" easy for me to invest from afar. I will definitely take a deep dive into your website over the weekend. I look forward to chatting w you some more. Tim

That's definitely the best kind of setup! If your son is there and has good contacts, I'd be tempted to continue investing there before drifting out anywhere else. Assuming there's still cash flow there?

Hello! @Tim McKelvey

Welcome to BP, and congratulations on making the decision to invest in your future via real estate.

I have written a few blog posts that may help you get started here on BP, and with your investing. Please click on the links, give them a read, and share your thoughts in the comments.

First is a post that I feel will help not get overwhelmed with the amount of info that is here on BP:

The second is a post that will help get you focused with your real estate investing goals:

The last one is a post that will help you choose an “investor friendly” real estate agent. There are many agents out there, but it’s important to choose the right one.
