How do I invest in remote areas? Experiences?

I live in Montreal, Canada and would like to invest in rental properties in Florida.  My goal is to find a distressed property or foreclosure, fix it up and turn it into a short-term vacation rental aka Airbnb.  Has anyone had any experience of pursuing a similar strategy?  How did you find the right people, ie. contractors, agents, tax accountants, property managers, etc.
