Newbie from Lansing Michigan

I feel very previlledged to join this group. I am sure my life is going to change for the better from this day forward. I went to a realestate seminar yesterday and quickly saw through the presenter's mind. before the free seminar concluded we were informed that it was a presentation provided by a trade like school. Considering that i have a functioning brain with the ability to read and analyze data i have decided that they are not going to make money off of me on information that is available for free or even a much smaller fraction of their cost.
This is my vision and am kindly seeking your guidance. I live near Lansing MI. An area that has been negatively affected by the restructuring of the BIG THREE. Jobs are had to find. Many people have had or are in the process of foreclosure. I am pretty sure that there are enormous REOs. I am specifically nterested in rental properties as it might not be as easy to flip the houses. So please advise me on how and where to start.
