What mentor or coach has accelerated your success?

Last year I shifted from one industry to another. I've been in the beauty industry since I was 16. I have written about beauty, own a salon, created a hair careline. In other words... been there done that. The salon business is in my blood but It was time for a new focus and I have always wanted to get involved in real estate.

The idea of creating passive income and the challenge of figuring out solutions intrigued me. As well as being able to transfer my business skills.

As with any industry their are certain people that dominate the area and learning from them is a privilege. Coaching or training from these individuals can cut years off your time line and accelerate your growth and connections.

As a young stylist I had many mentors but I did not necessary choose to learn from the right ones right away. It took me a while (10 years) to find the right path.

This time around knowing and being CLEAR in what I want and who I want to surround myself makes it much easier to find people who are aligned with where I want to be and learn from them.

We used Verne Harnish's Scaling up coaches. The company was called Petra. They were amazing with helping us scale our real estate companies and create an infrastructure and systems we were lacking.

@Allison Bridges  - This is a very contested debate in BP.  There are those who believe coaching and mentoring are beneficial and well worth the time and money.  Then there are those who believe it is a waste of time/money, and all the information you need can be found on this site or others - self education is the way to go.

I would agree with you, as I have benefited from two mentors, a coaching program, and have also been a college professor and real estate coach.  In addition, you are astute as to what you know compared to what you don't know.  I believe this level of awareness is critical for a good coaching/mentor relationship.  My first mentor was my professor/employer.  I learned a tremendous amount from him while working for him for 6 years.  My second was a business mentor versus a real estate mentor.  It allowed me to expand how I see my real estate business.  The coaching program I have used offers a great educational program which everyone in my company now goes through.  It cuts down on our training time.  So, each has a distinct purpose.

All that being said, I also believe a coach or mentor is someone you are in relationship with versus a podcast or book.  As a professor and coach, understanding material many times involves talking, asking and reflecting in a manner outside of just reading and or listening.  It takes doing, working through issues, and getting feedback.

My mentors are not people you may know or recognize, but they are authorities in their subjects, and were available to me.  That as the key to me.  I wasn't looking for the biggest names, just the ones that would provide the most guidance.

@Allison Bridges I agree with you that the right type of coaches and mentors can accelerate one’s learning curve and help someone perform better than they would perform without a coach or mentor. I had a real estate coach that I worked with for a year and that was really helpful to me. The 2 biggest lessons that I learned about scaling a real estate business from my mentor were 1) get an assistant, and 2) use other people’s money. Following that advice has helped me build a sizable portfolio.

The mentors that I have had include my real estate partner, Jason Moss, a few of my hard money lenders, John Burly with lease option and a few other trainers at some of the seminars that I attended.
