Build on my extra lot?

Hello to all,

First post ever, total noob. 

I'm in the earliest stages of planning to build a small 1200+/- sq. ft. home on my adjoining lot. From several contractors I've asked, I'm getting a  pretty wide range of pricing per sq. ft. for comparable builds. Does anyone here have recent experience building new?
