Looking To Learn

6 Replies

Hi y'all,

I've been looking to get in to REI for a little over a year now but I'm just starting to really dive in to books and forums to really try to get a handle on things before jumping in. I'm hoping that by Dec this year I'll be buying my first property.

So, what I'm asking is that if there are any experienced investors in the Eagle River/Anchorage area , especially ones with experience in small multi-family rental units, who would like to get some coffee on my dollar, I'd love to pick your brain for a bit. You pick where you'd like to get coffee and I'll meet you there.

Or, if anyone know of a REI/landlord meetup in the area, I'd love to hear about that as well. I'm trying to immerse myself in this as much as I can.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard Brian! There's lots of resources here to get you started. I'd suggest checking out our local REI club here: http://www.meetup.com/R_E_X_/

RPM is also starting a new group related specifically to property mgmt which should be a fantastic resource also: http://www.meetup.com/Real-Property-Management-Edu...

Beyond that, if you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to take a stab at them or get you pointed in the right direction, call or text me anytime..

@Ben Vandorn :

I appreciate the info and the links. I'll def. try to make it to one of the meet ups! As far as specific questions, most of mine fall along the lines of "What would today's you tell past you to help your investment/management when you were just getting started?" and "How did you make the jump from your first property to your second?" That second question is the one that is getting to me. Finding, running the numbers, buying, and, to an extent, managing property I can grasp with little issue. Figuring out how folks are saving and buying second properties within 2 years based solely on the, in my book, slim margins most folks are okay with (from what I can see) is a mystery.

Hey Brian,

I am a Realtor who specializes in real estate investing. I began by purchasing my first investment property here in Anchorage in 2008 (A 4 plex) while I was still working for the military. I acquired a few rental properties before I decided to get into it myself to help people like you go through the process with someone who has first hand experience. I would love to help answer some of your questions you have about the process and help build a plan to get you to your real estate goals.

We are also hosting a big real estate investing panel with many different professionals that can help teach you things about the process. We will have a property manager, real estate attorney, lenders who specialize in real estate investing, 1031 tax exchange specialist and more. This event is made for people like yourself to come meet local professionals who specialize in different areas of real estate. There is no cost and no obligation to using anyone that speaks at the event, but you may end up wanting to add most or all of them to your support circle when you begin investing.

The event is May 2nd from 6-8:30pm.

@Jonathon Rodriguez When is the next meeting? Just reading this post a month after the fact - is a big bummer. Did you advertise this or just keep it small/private? Know of anything similar in the valley?

Thanks,

~ Julie

@Jonathon Rodriguez I am interested in buying here in the Anchorage/Eagle River area. I'm new, but want to jump in 100%. Like you I'm starting while still active duty.
