Is joining a mastermind group a route to success?

Question

I have heard several books and podcasts refer to Mastermind groups.  Is joining a mastermind group a road to gaining knowledge, networking, and success?  I am open to all opinions on the benefits of mastermind groups.

The "Mastermind Group" on it's own doesn't mean much. I have belonged to terrible groups & amazing groups that have transformed my life for the better

The group has to have the right chemistry of members, ground rules, & accountability.

I think the hard part is getting the right set of people together. Somehow that always seems the hard part, finding the right people that can "work" together. Some people are great individuals but poor team members.

I agree with everyone.  I have been a part of 2 mastermind groups.  Mastermind groups that I've seen draw a lot of newbies.  Newbies may not provide a lot of value from a learning experience as they may be in the same boat as you (if you are a newbie).

What they may be able to provide  you is accountability.  If you pair up with some one that is equally motivated you can hold each other accountable to action.  That may be worth it.

Don't you think that would really depend on who was in that group?

Should I mention that you should vet your mentors or "leaders" outside that group. I think if you are going to go somewhere or to someone for advice or learning their ways that you not take their opinions hook, line and sinker at least until you get them checked out in your areas as to the opinions of those not associated with them. :)

I don't know about  St Louis, but I've been attending meetups recently and a mastermind group yesterday and it was very informative.  Discussing with like minded individuals and investors, you can't go wrong.  Besides, what's the downside?

Hi William,

There is definitely no harm in joining a mastermind group, unless they're charging you to do so. Any time you can be with a group of people to bounce ideas, brainstorm, share stories and learn from successes and mistakes it's a good idea. The hard part is finding the right people and/or group. I've joined groups only to find out that no one in the group has done a deal yet. Doesn't mean you can't learn or teach but I want at least one other person who isn't there just trying to learn.
