Does anyone else there in BP land find any value from reading newspapers, other than the classifieds, to keep abreast of trends or other financial happenings. If so, what papers?
I read the New York Times, but get most of my new online.
Google Alerts and Custom Newsfeeds tend to keep me in the Rabbit Hole. I pick up the local paper to get a sigh about the small town.
I just signed up for a trial subscription with the Wall St Journal. Was hoping to broaden my business knowledge. Become a little more Worldly I guess. Been reading it for 2 weeks and have found nothing of interest in it whatsoever. Lots of pictures of terrorists and other middle east nonsense, but nothing that has helped me tweak my real estate investing business. I did read an article about a guy who only collects $1 per year in income as the CEO of his company, but makes $1M per day in dividends. He owns some pipeline company. Wouldn't even know what to do with $1M/day. I guess nothing you could do except try to figure out how to make $2M/day.
There was also an interesting article about the idiot from Microsoft who paid $1.5B too much for the Clippers. I guess when you have $22B, it is OK to throw away an extra $1.5B every now and then.
I like the Wall Street Journal a lot, especially the business section. Every Friday they a have a RE section called the Mansion....very interesting read.
If your local market is big enough find the Local Business Journal www.bizjournal.com they often list business sales, commercial sales, and local business news. It's usually pretty expensive (I think last time I was getting it it was $150/quarter) but lead wise, and local indepthedness is pretty amazing.
Yea I've thought about taking up the Wall St Journal or even my local paper just to keep abreast of my market but it seems like at the negativity would outweigh any potential value add.
Does anyone read their local paper just to keep tabs on your markets?
