General contractor asking for 50% advance

I received quotes from contractors to remodel a home in Miami (Angie.com); the contractor that I want to work with is asking for 25% when signing the contract and 25% at the start date. The other 25% when 75% of the job is completed and the final 25% when the job is completed.

I wondered if this is how it works. Thank you for your comments and guidance.
