Short term rental registration with LLC

Seb Ko
Posted

Hi there, has anyone transferred ownership of a property already registered with Chicago for short term rentals to an LLC? I intend to move all platforms like Airbnb and utilities to this LLC. Are there any ramifications for the short term registration? For example I know they ask for a utility or banking letter every year - this will no longer be in my name but rather with the LLC.

Quote from @Jonathan Klemm:

Hey @Seb Ko - I've never done this before myself, but I know the biggest thing the City of Chicago is looking for is alignment with addresses and names.  If it's a 2-4 unit building it's supposed to be you only renting out your unit, so I am not sure it's worth the risk of switching and getting on their radar?

What are the pros/cons of switching everything into an LLC?

Is there a bigger play here to scale and add more units to the LLC? That's the only reason it'd make sense in my mind to make the switch to an LLC.

I agree 100% with @Jonathan Klemm . Applying for a STR license through the city with an LLC can over complicate things.
