Need suggestions with DIY kitchen renovation

Hi

I bought a home in Boston area that I plan to renovate. The kitchen design is not appealing. Hoping for a brighter finish. 

Specifically looking for ideas on cabinets (finish/color), backsplash and/or countertops. Would love to get ideas.

I would just paint the lowers gery and the uppers white. Two tone cabs are popular right now. For the backslash I would go with a nice glass tile. It will really enhance the look. For the counter top depends What type of investment property is it.
