Ghosted by rehab contractor after paying $5K deposit

I started working with a new property management company about a year ago. They handled one rehab that went well. The second one not so much. I paid roughly a $5K deposit to have a contractor start rehab work on a LTR SFH in the Cleveland area. Long story short my PM company paid the contractor and then they disappeared with the funds and did not complete any rehab work. My PM company's attempt to contact the contractor to recover the money have gone unanswered. They advised they would look into legal options when I was first informed of what was happening but have essentially gone quiet on the matter. Anyone been in a similar situation or have advice on what accountability I should expect from my PM company?

Sounds like your PM is also your general contractor , and their sub screwed them . I would tell the PM "Sorry for your loss . but you have been paid and need to get the job done "
