I have a 26" toolbox that I put in my car every morning.  In it I have:

Big hammer

Medium adj wrench

Baby adj wrench

Pipe wrench

Big corded drill

Cordless drill

Box of drill bits

Electrical tape

Voltage tester

A few boxes of screws

Headlight

Screwdrivers

Boxcutter

Forstner bit

Angle grinder with diamond blade

And I think that's it.  It gets heavy but is all I need 90% of the time.

Well, @Linda Weygant you need the air compressor for the nail guns! There are other tools that will run on it as well, but our nail guns have become indispensable. We have a large one for framing and a smaller one for trim. They are great!

We have done just as others have suggested, buy as we have need. We've worked on our own houses for over 30 years, so we've had time to discover what we need. One of my favorite tools that I forgot to put on the list is "Oscar". It's an oscillating cutter/scraper that I picked up on sale at Harbor Freight for $10. We have used it for cutting holes in sheetrock, scraping up glue-down vinyl, undercutting door frames, and other little jobs.

I like what's been said so far...  buy some basics, then purchase more per job as needed.   Do you have any building / construction / handyman experience?

No worries.  You would not be the first to start a band, THEN learn how to play the instruments.

Seriously? Visit a hardware store. Depending on the job, you might need anything and everything in it. I doubt I could remember all of the tools we've used on our rentals, but I'll give it a shot.

Screwdrivers of various sizes/types, hammers, crowbar, cat's paw, shovels, rakes, broom & dust pan, wrenches of various sizes/types, pliers, wire strippers, circuit tester, reciprocating saw, circular saw, hacksaw, tile saw, miter saw, table saw, box cutter, scissors, pencils, tape measure, level, drill with bits and other attachments, string, saw horses, rotozip, heatgun, clamps, tin snips, saber saw, trowels, buckets, sheet rock knives, nail guns, paint brushes, rollers, trays, paint sprayer, rags, hoses & sprayers, power washer, tarps, carpet stretcher, work lights, garbage cans, paper tiger, garden sprayer, extension ladder, step stool, 6 & 8 foot step ladders, air compressor, toilet brush, shop vac, extension cords, fans . . . . . . .

If a task or repair comes up, and I don't have the tool that is needed, or one that could be used to get the job done, I usually buy it if it is less than $100. If it is more, then I have to justify thay it will come up again, or buying the tool will cost the same or less than paying someone to do that task. I also am a maker/builder before anything else, and love any excuse for new tools.

I would get at least a jigsaw, reciprocating saw, miter saw, hammer, cordless drill, plier set, screwdriver set.  The oscillating tool is also nice for cutting hard to reach plumbing and other stuff but the blades can get pretty expensive.  There's also a battery powered trim nailer (ryobi one) which is convenient because then you don't have to mess with air compressors.

I'm pretty sure I have the exact same oscillating cutter/scraper you're talking about.  Think I got it at Harbor Freight on sale.  (They have sales sometimes....)
