Fire Rated Doors

I am rehabbing a home in the Chicago area and my contractor said that I have to replace the doors from the garage with fire rated doors. On the estimate, the price is $1,900 for materials and labor. That seems a little high to me. I am sure there is some contractor mark up in the price, but is the amount reasonable to install 2 fire rated doors?

Hi Keishee,

You should be able to purchase a 20-min fire-rated door from Lowes or Home Depot for ~$250 + $50 for hardware...so $300 per door.

2 doors x $300 each = $600 total in materials

That leaves $1,300 for labor & markup which seems excessive.

I would clarify with your contractor the type of door/sku # that he is planning on installing to get a better idea of material costs and labor costs included in the proposal.
