Vinyl plank or hardwood

We just purchased our primary residence. Our last house we did solid Bruce hardwood. When we sold, the people buying loved it... but the appraiser said it didn't affect the value of the house. Now our current house needs all new flooring. The wife wants hardwood in the main areas and carpet in the bedrooms. I am tempted to save money for other projects and do vinyl plank throughout. The house is nice, but not in a area hardwood is expected. Our money is tight, any opinions? Brand recommendations? She likes the wider plank in darker colors. Shaw and Allure are the common ones local. We shop Menards, Lowes or Home Depot Thanks
